Letter: Assistant Manager, Traffic Department, December 19, 1995

Mr. Paul Gadon, on behalf of the residents of Riverside Drive, appeared before Council and presented a petition recommending that the existing speed limit of 50 kmh on Riverside Drive between Mount Seymour Parkway and the 2200 block Chapman Way be reduced to 40 kmh and that adequate speed limit signage be installed. Mr. Gadon reviewed the current traffic situation, the absence of sidewalks, the sparse street lighting and urged Council to approve their request.

Moved by Councillor CUTHBERT, Seconded by Councillor HARRIS and CARRIED THAT this item be returned to the June 10, 1996 Executive Committee meeting for further consideration.

The following spoke in favour of retaining the 40 km/h speed limit on Riverside Drive and questioned the accuracy of the studies undertaken which support a 50 km/h speed limit. As a gateway to Seymour Demonstration Forest, they indicated Riverside Drive generates considerable traffic comprising vehicles, bikers, pedestrians, horses etc. To enhance their safety and quality of life, they suggested retention of the 40 km/h speed limit, installation of improved signage, implementation of traffic calming measures and greater enforcement of the speed limit. The speakers urged Council to consider their concerns favourably.
